To visit the Ílhavo Maritime Museum is to go aboard on an adventure of senses, knowledge and leisure.
The Ílhavo Maritime Museum (MMI) is today a very unique museum. Its mission is to preserve the memories of the sea work and develop the maritime culture and identity of the Portuguese people. Museum, Aquarium and Investigation define the present Museum, an institution dedicated to all coastal communities and open to the most diverse publics.
In MMI you will be able to witness the strong connection from the “Ílhavos” to the sea and to the “Ria de Aveiro”. The codfish fishing in the seas of Newfoundland and Greenland, the fishing in the “Ria”, the diaspora of the “Ílhavos” along the Portuguese coastline are the patrimonial references of the Museum. To each subject there is a permanent exhibition, that offers you the possibility of being in touch with remnants of a recent past.
Renovated and expanded in 2001, it moved to a beautiful building of modern architecture, and since 2013, it included an admirable Codfish Aquarium.
